I talk often about how close I am with my family so it’s only fitting to do an entire blog devoted to them.
My Mom:
My mom is the strongest woman I know. Some of you may know that my family has been through some stressful things lately. While dealing with all of this on her plate, my mom held our family together. Instead of complaining about what she had to deal with, she was constantly asking about how we were doing with it. She is also extremely giving, hysterical and just fun to be around. There is so much more I could say but I can’t keep writing all night! (She would want me to get some sleep :P)
My Dad:
My dad is the comforting energy in my family. Whenever I’m stressed or having a bad day, even a simple look from him makes me crumble because I know everything will be ok. He is also always there. When I was little me and him had a joke that if I ever needed him, I just had to call for "daddy delivery service". They would deliver 24/7 365 (which meant I was only in trouble one day every four years :P). Even now, since he’s travelling often, he's there figuratively and not just because of the constant facebook poke war.
My Sister:
My sister and I have always been best friends. Although we are 5 and a half years apart, we are closer than most could believe possible. One thing that always amazed me was that when her friends came over, she wouldn’t shoo me away like older sisters would. She would let me hang out with them. That says a lot. And although we bicker every once in a while about what else I’ve stolen from her closet, we are probably the closest sisters you will ever meet.

Attitude Decides It All

Live life as if you just got a prize out of you cereal box.
The past week or so, I haven't been myself. Some of you may have noticed that I haven't exactly been happy, which is different for me. One Thursday morning I went through my usual routine and started to pour my cereal. Soon enough I discovered that Cheerios still put prizes in their boxes. This set up my entire day. I was happy again for the first time in a long time. Suddenly everything was working out again.
What I learned was that if you wake up thinking it'll be a bad day, you right. It will be a bad day. But if you wake up and go to school like you just found a prize in your cereal, things might just get better.

Reading
On formspring I was recently asked a question that caught my attention. The question/comment was, “Why do you like to read so much. It’s so boring. I don’t see the appeal.” While answering back, I found it challenging to keep my answer under 2 paragraphs. After giving my backspace a workout, I still had more to say. Finally, I decided I would just rewrite my response on a blog post:
A few years ago, I would have agreed that reading is boring and pointless. I have dyslexia and a communication disorder which, combined, gave me an excellent reason to have an aversion to reading.
In eighth grade, my best friend (of past, present, and hopefully future) pushed her favorite books on me. All my life I listened to adults telling me to read. “It’s good for you….. You’d love it if you found the right book…. You’re just not giving it a chance….” Eventually I stopped listening to adults on that subject matter, but my best friend was the first kid my age to suggest it. I figured there must be something to it if everyone was so insistent on me reading. Those three books she gave me are still the best books I’ve ever read. That was it for me: I was hooked. It turns out: all the adults were right. You just have to find the right genre. Trust me; if I could like reading, you could too.
Anyway, after I got into it, I realized something: when you read a book, you can be completely transported out of your own life and into the book. You can forget about all your troubles and stress, even for just a moment. Everybody has an outlet like that.
Some people like beat of their music, others like the soothing hum of the ocean, and some, like me, love to get lost in a book. Music can block out the world and take the listener on a journey through the melody. The oceans sounds are always calming to the mind. A book can take me away from the present situation and put me into a story where everything is different. That’s why I read.

Life Is Short
Life is too short to go on the way most of us do. Stop saying well I’ll do it someday because someday could be taken away in the blink of an eye. It could just be something simple, like getting over your fear of roller coasters. Do it now, why wait until later? You could end up getting on the rollercoaster and realizing you missed out all your life. Then you have yet another thing to regret.
But more seriously, if you love someone but are too scared to tell them: don’t wait, you could lose your chance. If you’re in a fight with your friend: forgive and forget. It's not worth the pain. If you recently got in a fight with your parents: go home right now and hug them. When everything else is wrong, your family is the only thing you have left. Life is too short for those petty problems. In the blink of an eye, you could lose your chance to apologize or confess. So do it now, while you still have the chance. No fear.

Never Give Up
When I was five years old, I joined karate. At five ears old, there’s no way I could have known how much I would learn. I’m not just talking about Back-kicks and the perfect Right Hook; I’m talking about life lessons. Throughout the seven years it took to get my black belt, I was off and on crutches, always had at least an ankle brace on, went through extensive physical therapy and underwent surgery. To get my black belt, I had to survive a 50 mile bike ride and four months of what we all called “boot camp” which was appropriately named. With all my experiences, I feel like I am capable of understanding dedication. There were so many times that I wanted to give up. There were also many doctors who told me it would be impossible to finish. I have one message for my readers:
Never give up. If you want straight A’s, study as much as you have to in order to achieve that goal. If you want to be a singer, sing your heart out and never let your voice be silenced. And if you want to be a black belt, don’t let any injures hold you back. If you want to do anything that seems impossible right now, don’t let anyone discourage you.
Prove them wrong and never give up.

Bullying
I’ve learned something recently. It seems the human mind holds on to negativity. Our brains hold onto any negative comment. It could be the simplest remark murmured under a peer’s breath as you walk by. It could be a comment said to your face that wasn’t necessarily designed to upset you. It could also be something one of your ‘friends’ made fun of you for without realizing it was serious to you. Whatever the cause or whoever the negativity comes from, either way: it hurts. It takes a million compliments for the human mind to forget about ONE bad comment. Somehow we convince ourselves that the bad stuff is easier to believe. We file it away in a drawer in the back of our mind until it comes back to haunt us.
We all have something we’re self-conscious about. For me, it’s my acting abilities but it could be very different for you. You could worry that your weight is a little higher than it should be, that your laugh is too high pitch or that you aren’t the best singer. Whatever it is, just remember: you’re always your worst critic. I know it sounds cliché but it’s true.
I finally understand why bullying is on the news and why schools are working so hard to get rid of it. Even if you don’t mean what you’re saying about someone, it could be very serious to them. So think before you speak and remember: A kind word goes a long way.
